Have you been invited to a wedding with a dress code and are not sure what to do with the information? I’ve got you.
If you see “formal” on an invitation it can mean a lot of different things. From semi formal, to black tie, to white tie. Generally when you are just given the parameters of “formal attire” it means a simple and classic floor length gown, or a dark colored suit/tux for men.
Beach formal is such a fun attire. You will only see this dress code if you are attending a wedding that is well…. at the beach. You will need to consider ease of walking in the sand and being outside with a breeze. Light colored linen suits and dress shirts without a tie for men. For women, knee or midi length dresses in light colors or a soft print. Best part, bare foot is totally acceptable. If that is not your thing, boat shoes for men or sandals for women.
The biggest questions guests have when invited to a casual wedding.. “Can I wear Jeans?” The answer is no. While that is usually considered casual wear, a casual wedding is a bit different. For men; pants, collared shirt and dress shoes. For women; a short sundress, jumpsuit, dress pants with a blouse, or a skirt with a blouse.
Let’s pretend formal and casual had a baby. You got that picture in your head? That is cocktail attire. For women, a party dress that finishes at or above the knees and formal shoes. For men, neutral suits with a tie and dress shoes. Cocktail attire is very popular for weddings and is flexible on what it means. Consider the venue and the couple when selecting your outfit.
While black tie is usually considered “formal”, the actual definition is “semi-formal”. Black tie was first used to describe evening wear in the 19th century, in today’s modern world its meaning has shifted. Formally it required floor length gowns and tuxedos. Today a modern dark colored suit and tie, as well as a floor length cocktail dress are completely appropriate.
Well first off, if you get invited to a white tie wedding, please let me know so I can attend with you. White tie is the most formal dress code there is. It includes full length ball gowns, tiaras (yes please), and plenty of jewels. Men should wear a formal tuxedo or dress suit, complete with a bow tie.
The most important thing to consider when attending a garden wedding is your shoes. A garden attire implies you will be outside and most likely on the lawn. You should wear flat shoes or wedges, avoid stilettos at all cost. Floral printed knee length dresses, pastel colors, and flirty accessories for women. Men can wear colored suits, linen, ties or bowties, and jackets optional.
Festive wear is exactly what it sounds like, festive! If you are attending a theme wedding, wear something to fit with the theme. If there is no specified theme or one you can pick up on, go for a formal outfit with a little added flair. This is a common attire for winter or holiday weddings. Wear something with sequins, feathers, or some really bright colors. Men can accent a neutral suit with a patterned tie and pocket square, or go for a colored suit.
Hope this helps, have fun at the party!
